NFL Players on Alert as Break-ins Target Stars During the Season

This includes a recent break-in at the home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, which occurred while the team was playing in Dallas on December 9. As Detroit Lions players prepare for their next road games, they’re taking extra precautions to ensure they don’t become the next targets.
Jameson Williams, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, is one of many who has sent out a reminder to fellow teammates to stay vigilant. "It's that time of year, just be safe and take care of yourself," Williams said, echoing the sentiments of other players who are increasingly aware of the risks. NFL players, especially those who are well-known, have publicly visible schedules. Games are broadcasted nationally, and it doesn’t take much for criminals to learn when players will be away from their homes.

Burrow’s break-in is just the latest in a troubling trend. Earlier this season, Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were targeted when their homes were broken into in early October. Kelce’s home was particularly hit hard, with thousands of dollars in valuables taken. In all cases, the timing of these incidents coincided with the players being away for games, making it easier for burglars to target their properties.
Detroit Lions defensive tackle DJ Reader acknowledged how widespread this issue is, stating, "People can sit and plot and figure out if you're home or not." He also pointed out that these types of crimes aren’t new but are more frequent during the holiday season when people are struggling financially. "It seems like people don’t care. It’s unfortunate where we are right now. People are just starving, hungry," Reader said, emphasizing the tough times many are facing.
With the holidays in full swing, players are urged to be more cautious, watching their surroundings and taking steps to protect their homes. In fact, the NFL itself sent a memo in late November warning players about the increasing number of break-ins targeting them. This is not just a local problem for players in one city; it is a nationwide issue affecting stars across the league.
For the Lions, who are about to embark on a two-game road trip, this is a pressing concern. The team is taking every step to ensure their safety while on the road. "Everybody knows your schedule," Reader added, pointing out the vulnerability players face when their absence is easily predictable. As the season continues, players are more aware than ever of the risks, and it’s clear that security will be a top priority moving forward.
