Derek Carr's Injury Ends His Season, Alvin Kamara Eyes 1,000 Yards Amid Saints' Tough Situation

The New Orleans Saints are heading into the final week of the NFL season, and while it’s been a season of ups and downs, the latest developments have Saints fans feeling both disappointed and hopeful. The team, which holds a 5-11 record, will be without their starting quarterback, Derek Carr, for their season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carr, who had already been sidelined for three consecutive games with a fractured left hand, has now officially been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The injury, which occurred during a win against the New York Giants on December 8, ultimately proved to be more serious than initially anticipated. Though the Saints held onto a glimmer of hope that Carr might be able to return, his rehabilitation did not progress as expected. Head coach Darren Rizzi, who took over after Dennis Allen’s firing, had been hopeful about Carr’s chances, especially after attempting a simulated game and even injecting the hand to test its functionality. However, as Rizzi admitted, the attempt didn’t yield the results they were hoping for, and the decision was made to officially shut Carr down for the year.

In his absence, rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will be taking the reins. While Rattler has shown promise, he has yet to secure a victory as a starter, making the task ahead even more daunting. The Saints have struggled without Carr, with a 0-6 record in games he hasn’t played. The quarterback’s performance this season, throwing for 2,145 yards and 15 touchdowns, has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing year for New Orleans.

Meanwhile, running back Alvin Kamara, who has had an impressive season, is hoping to cap it off with his first-ever 1,000-yard rushing campaign. Kamara, who’s just 50 yards shy of the milestone, is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game due to a groin injury that has kept him sidelined for the past two games. Despite the injury, Kamara will test his condition in pregame warmups and hopes to play if he feels ready. The Saints could be in a tough spot if Kamara can’t go, with backup Kendre Miller also out due to a concussion. This could mean more responsibility for recently acquired running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who has yet to make a significant impact since joining the team.

As if things weren’t complicated enough, Saints fans face a dilemma in the season finale. A win for New Orleans would prevent the hated Atlanta Falcons from reaching the playoffs. However, this victory would simultaneously give the Falcons a shot at the NFC South title, should they beat the Carolina Panthers. The Saints, then, would be forced to weigh the bitter satisfaction of beating their division rivals against the looming reality of the Falcons advancing to the postseason while New Orleans stays home.

For now, the Saints are focused on finishing strong despite the obstacles. Derek Carr’s injury has been a tough blow for the team, and with so many key players dealing with injuries, including Kamara and several defensive starters, the Saints face an uphill battle to end the season on a positive note. Regardless of the outcome, the road ahead for New Orleans will require significant adjustments and tough decisions as they plan for the future.
