Kings Place Arthur Kaliyev on Waivers as Future in LA Remains Uncertain
In a significant move by the Los Angeles Kings, winger Arthur Kaliyev has been placed on waivers, as reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. This marks a pivotal moment in Kaliyev’s career, one that has been riddled with both promise and struggles. The decision comes after Kaliyev sustained a fractured clavicle in the pre-season, forcing him onto the season-opening injured reserve list. After months of recovery, he was finally activated on December 28th and spent a brief stint in the AHL with the Ontario Reign.
During his time in the minors, Kaliyev showed flashes of his potential, recording two points in five games. However, with his activation from the injured reserve, he is now eligible for waivers, and the Kings are attempting to pass him through in hopes of sending him back to the AHL. This situation highlights the uncertainty surrounding his future in Los Angeles, as Kaliyev has yet to secure a consistent role in the NHL despite being considered one of the Kings’ top prospects.

Drafted by the Kings in 2019 with the first pick of the second round, Kaliyev quickly became a player to watch. He had an encouraging rookie season in 2021-22, scoring 14 goals and 27 points. The following season, despite an injury that kept him out for a couple of months, Kaliyev still managed to post solid numbers with 13 goals and 28 points in just 56 games. However, his growth seemed to plateau last season, as he struggled to find his place in the lineup and posted only 15 points in 51 games. This lack of consistency resulted in him becoming a regular healthy scratch, further complicating his prospects with the Kings.
Over the course of his career, Kaliyev has accumulated 35 goals and 71 points in 188 NHL games. Yet, despite his offensive potential, he has been unable to find stability within the Kings' roster, even after several changes in his role. This is particularly surprising given his high ceiling, as Kaliyev’s shot and scoring ability make him a valuable asset for any team seeking a potential middle-six scorer.
With a cap hit of just $825,000 and the added benefit of restricted free-agent status with arbitration rights this summer, Kaliyev could be an intriguing option for other teams looking to add a skilled winger at a relatively low cost. His journey in Los Angeles, though uncertain, may provide a fresh opportunity for another organization willing to give him a chance to unlock his potential. As of now, Kaliyev’s time with the Kings could be coming to an end, but the right situation elsewhere might help him find the success he’s been searching for.
