Mel Gibson Opens Up About Losing His Home to LA Wildfires
Recently, Mel Gibson revealed the devastating news that his Malibu home was destroyed in the relentless Los Angeles wildfires while he was away recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience in Austin, Texas. The Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker expressed his deep sense of loss and frustration over the tragedy, which has claimed lives, displaced thousands, and reduced countless homes to ashes.
Gibson described his property, which he had called home for over 15 years, as “completely toasted.” He shared that the homes of some of his neighbors, including that of fellow actor Ed Harris, were also consumed by the inferno. Thankfully, Gibson’s family heeded evacuation orders and escaped unharmed, a relief amidst the calamity.

Speaking on Elizabeth Vargas Reports , Gibson reflected on the emotional toll of losing his home. "It’s kind of devastating, it’s emotional," he said. With a bittersweet note, he added, "I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders." Despite his stoicism, the loss of a place imbued with years of memories clearly weighed heavily on him.
The wildfires, among the worst in Los Angeles history, have wreaked havoc across 31,000 acres of land, with five major blazes still raging in areas like Palisades and Eaton. Over 180,000 residents have been evacuated, and officials warn that high winds could exacerbate the crisis further.
Gibson did not shy away from criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of failing to take effective preventive measures. "He claimed he was going to take care of the forests but didn’t do anything," Gibson remarked, even joking that taxpayer money may have gone toward the governor’s "hair gel." His frustration echoed broader discontent as many Californians struggle to reconcile the state’s promises with the grim reality.
The fires have affected other celebrities as well, including Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, and Ricki Lake, all of whom have lost their homes. Communities have rallied together, with many, like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, offering shelter to evacuees.
While the flames have left destruction in their wake, the resilience of those affected remains a testament to the human spirit. As Gibson and countless others navigate the aftermath, their stories remind us of the urgent need to address environmental crises and prepare for the challenges ahead.
