
Ticketmaster Rejects Invitation to UK Committee Over Dynamic Pricing Concerns
Ticketmaster has made headlines after rejecting an invitation to appear before a UK parliamentary committee that is looking into the controversial practice of dynamic pricing and its impact on consumer protection. This move comes at a time when the company is under scrutiny from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over its handling of ticket sales for Oasis' reunion tour, which saw ticket prices for the band’s concerts shockingly soar to double their original cost.
The Business and Trade Committee had invited Ticketmaster to attend an evidence session next week, as part of an investigation into fairer pricing practices for live events and ticket sales. However, Ticketmaster declined the invitation, explaining that it could not properly respond to questions about dynamic pricing while the CMA's ongoing investigation into Oasis ticket sales is still underway. The CMA is probing whether Ticketmaster used dynamic pricing, a system where ticket prices fluctuate based on demand, and whether this violates consumer protection laws.

Ticketmaster’s refusal to appear before the committee has drawn attention, especially as the incident involving Oasis tickets sparked a public outcry. Fans were outraged to discover that the price of standard tickets had more than doubled in some cases, leading to concerns about transparency and fairness in ticket pricing. In response to the committee's invitation, Ticketmaster UK Managing Director Andrew Parsons stated that the company would submit written evidence ahead of the hearing and engage in a consultation scheduled for April.
Despite the company's decision to bypass the live session, Committee Chairman Liam Byrne reiterated the importance of transparency and accountability. He emphasized that the incident surrounding Oasis tickets had ignited a broader public debate on how much consumers are being asked to pay for tickets and services in general. Byrne had hoped for Ticketmaster's participation in the session, believing it would provide an opportunity for the public to better understand the company’s practices and for the committee to gather valuable insights into how fairer pricing models might be implemented in the future.
While Ticketmaster’s choice to cooperate with the CMA's investigation is acknowledged, it seems the committee is still keen to hear from the company directly, hoping to shed light on their actions and policies in a public forum.
