Raptors Acquire P.J. Tucker in Trade with Heat
Big news in the NBA trade world—P.J. Tucker is on the move again! The Toronto Raptors have made a notable deadline move, acquiring the veteran forward from the Miami Heat in exchange for Davion Mitchell, a future second-round pick, and cash considerations. This trade adds yet another chapter to Tucker’s eventful journey this season.
Tucker, who initially started the season with the LA Clippers, has yet to play a single game this year. The 39-year-old forward and the Clippers had mutually agreed that he would stay away from the team as they explored trade options. He was eventually dealt to the Utah Jazz on February 1 as part of a package that included Mo Bamba. That trade sent Drew Eubanks and Patty Mills to the Clippers, but Tucker’s stay in Utah was short-lived. He was then rerouted to Miami in the blockbuster Jimmy Butler trade, and now, he finally lands in Toronto.

For the Raptors, bringing in Tucker adds veteran leadership and toughness, qualities he’s known for throughout his career. Though he hasn't played this season, Tucker’s defensive presence and ability to stretch the floor with corner threes could be valuable for a Raptors team looking to make a push in the Eastern Conference. However, there's also speculation that Tucker might be a buyout candidate, given that he’s in the final year of his three-year, $33 million contract.
On the other hand, Davion Mitchell, the promising young guard, now joins a retooled Miami Heat squad that recently acquired Andrew Wiggins in the Butler trade. Mitchell, selected ninth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 4.6 assists this season. He now gets an opportunity to contribute to a Heat team that is reshaping its roster for another playoff push.
This trade also helps the Heat financially, as they drop below the first apron, giving them more flexibility for future moves. Meanwhile, Toronto gets a gritty, experienced forward in Tucker, but it remains to be seen if he will suit up for the team or if this move is simply a stepping stone toward a buyout.
As the trade deadline approaches, expect more moves and surprises. Will Tucker play a role in Toronto’s future, or will he be on the move again soon? Stay tuned—things are just getting started!
