Former Graham Builders Site on Elm Road to Become Convenience Store

Hey everyone, big changes are coming to Elm Road in Bengeworth, Evesham. The former Graham Builders merchant site, which has been sitting there as an eyesore for quite some time, is now set to be transformed into a brand-new convenience store. The planning application has officially been approved, but not everyone is happy about it.

Now, if you’ve been in the area, you probably know the site has been unused for a while, and many residents were hoping for a different kind of redevelopment—perhaps something residential. David Hands, a local resident, expressed mixed feelings. While he’s glad to see something being done about the abandoned space, he believes housing would have been a better choice. He’s also worried about the potential traffic issues, as some shoppers might park along Elm Road instead of using the designated parking spots. And let’s not forget concerns about noise and light pollution, especially with the proposed late-night opening hours.

Another resident, Claire Troughton, was even more vocal in her opposition. She pointed out that Bengeworth already has plenty of convenience stores, including Lidl right down the road and several others on Port Street. According to her, traffic congestion is already an issue, and adding another store could make it worse—especially given the history of fatal accidents in the area. She’s also worried that if the store gets a license to sell alcohol, it might lead to anti-social behavior in the neighborhood.

Despite the objections, the project is moving forward. Plans include 20 parking spaces, with spots for disabled customers, parents with children, and even electric vehicle charging stations. Plus, it’s expected to create around 15 full-time and 10 part-time jobs, which is always a boost for the local economy. However, there’s still some mystery surrounding which retailer will take over the space. Rumors are flying, and many believe it could be a Tesco Express, though no official confirmation has been made yet.

So, what do you think? Is another convenience store a good addition to the area, or should this site have been used for something else? Let’s hear your thoughts!
