Haboob Sweeps Southwest, Creating Chaos on Roads
A powerful haboob tore through southwestern New Mexico on Monday, bringing near-zero visibility, shutting down highways, and putting drivers in dangerous conditions. This massive dust storm, driven by strong winds of up to 45 mph, rapidly engulfed areas like Deming and Doña Ana counties, forcing officials to issue emergency alerts urging motorists to shelter in place.
The National Weather Service had to close sections of Interstate 10, as well as parts of Interstates 25 and U.S. Highway 70, as the thick wall of dust made travel nearly impossible. These storms, which can rise up to 5,000 feet, are sudden and relentless, leaving people with little time to react. While you might see the rolling dust cloud from a distance, once it reaches you, there’s no escape—especially if you're on the road.
