Toronto Shivers Through One of the Coldest April Days on Record
Hey everyone, I hope you're bundled up because Toronto is getting an icy slap from winter—yes, even in April. It’s the kind of weather that makes you question whether spring is even a real thing anymore.
Today, Toronto is staring down one of the coldest April days we’ve had in years. I’m talking about temperatures that feel more like mid-January than early spring. This morning, the cold hit hard, with temperatures dipping to around -6°C, but the wind chill made it feel like a biting -15°C. Environment Canada didn’t waste time issuing a winter weather travel advisory early this morning, warning us about slippery conditions on roads and sidewalks thanks to lake-effect snow and freezing temperatures. While snowfall itself isn’t expected to pile up much—just 2 to 4 centimeters—the roads are slick and icy, especially for the morning commute.

And if that wasn't enough, wind gusts have been clocking in at around 60 kilometers an hour. Basically, if you had any plans to enjoy even a glimpse of spring today, they probably got blown away—literally. This kind of cold isn’t just rare for April, it’s historic. If we stay at -1°C or below today, it’ll be the coldest April daytime high in Toronto since 2016, maybe even stretching back to 2003. That’s wild when you consider the average high for this time of year is supposed to be around 10°C.
What makes it even more surreal is the fact that, as strange as it sounds, the Canadian Arctic is warmer than Toronto right now. You heard that right. The weather pattern this week is completely flipped—while parts of the Arctic are basking in temperatures well above seasonal, we’re stuck in a frigid blast coming down from the north. Meteorologists call it an "amplified jet stream," which is basically a fancy way of saying the winds are doing something totally weird and dragging Arctic air down into Ontario and Quebec.
And it doesn’t stop with today. Tomorrow morning, we’re waking up to -7°C and wind chills around -13. Then a gradual warm-up—if you can call it that—brings highs of just 4 or 5°C later in the week, with more snow, rain, and slush in the mix. The only slight chance for some sunshine? Maybe Sunday. Maybe.
And as if that wasn’t enough of a headache, Ontario is still dealing with the aftermath of that brutal ice storm from late March. Over 35,000 customers are still without power, especially around places like Peterborough and Orillia. That storm knocked out power to over a million homes and businesses. So yeah, winter isn’t just overstaying its welcome—it’s causing chaos on its way out.
So hang tight, Toronto. It’s cold, it’s messy, and it’s completely unfair—but at least we’ve got something to talk about. Stay warm out there.
