Liam Payne’s Final TV Role onBuilding the BandIs a Bittersweet Farewell
I recently watched Building the Band on Netflix, and I have to say, it’s not just another music competition—it carries a lot more weight because it features the final on-screen appearance of Liam Payne. Yes, that Liam Payne, from One Direction. His role as a guest judge on the show brings not only expertise but also heartfelt nostalgia, humor, and a sense of legacy that’s hard to miss.

Liam was right there on the panel alongside Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger, helping to shape and inspire a brand-new generation of pop groups. What struck me most wasn’t just his musical insight, but his playful spirit. During Episode 7, after the boy band Midnight 'Til Morning performed Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris , Liam gave some classic boy band advice—calling out their uncoordinated movement with a smile and saying, “We’re in power ballad. We’re looking for air grabs. Boy band central, baby.”
And in true Liam fashion, he couldn’t help poking fun at his own roots. When one contestant explained they were more about music than dance, Liam cheekily replied, “We’re amazing dancers, obviously, in One Direction. It’s what we’re known for.” He even stood up and gave a little hip sway, a subtle nod to both his charm and the band’s legacy. It was playful, warm, and honestly, kind of healing to watch.
There were other touching moments too—like when contestant Mason Watts recalled how his family won tickets to see One Direction at Madison Square Garden, and now, years later, he was performing in front of one of his idols. It was emotional, like a full-circle moment captured on camera. Liam simply smiled and waved at the camera: “Hi sisters!”
Beyond the laughs and fandom, Liam took his role seriously. He pushed contestants to bring more connection and chemistry to the stage. “You’ve really got to come out on stage and claim your moment,” he told them. That advice landed hard, knowing this would be his last appearance. His presence, though brief, was full of passion, commitment, and a genuine desire to help others find their voice.
Tragically, Liam passed away just weeks after filming in 2024, following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. He was only 31. The series opens with a touching message from host AJ McLean, dedicating the show to Liam’s memory and highlighting his love for music and people. You can feel it in every episode.
Watching Building the Band now isn’t just about entertainment—it's also a tribute. It's a reminder of Liam's joy, humor, and unwavering belief in young talent. Through this series, his light still shines.
