Remembering Peter Ryan: A Legacy Etched in Australian Journalism
It’s a sad moment for Australian media as we bid farewell to one of journalism’s finest voices—Peter Ryan, OAM, who passed away at the age of 64 in Sydney. A name synonymous with integrity, clarity, and dedication, Peter leaves behind not just an impressive body of work, but a deep and lasting legacy in the world of public broadcasting. After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2014, he fought courageously while continuing his work, ultimately retiring from the ABC in June 2025 to spend precious time with his family during palliative care.

Peter Ryan’s journey through journalism was remarkable. Starting as a humble copyboy on Sydney’s Daily Mirror , he rose through the ranks to become one of the most trusted voices in Australian business reporting. Over a 45-year career, he wore many hats—foreign correspondent, bureau chief in Washington, executive producer, and most notably, senior business correspondent for ABC. In each of these roles, Peter brought not only insight and precision but also a calm, steady voice that millions relied on for clarity amid chaos.
His work didn’t go unrecognised. In 2017, Peter earned a prestigious Walkley Award for his investigation into the Commonwealth Bank scandal—an exposé that played a significant role in sparking the banking royal commission. A year later, he was named National Press Club Finance Journalist of the Year. And in 2022, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal, honouring his service to journalism and public discourse.
Colleagues remember Peter not only for his journalistic skill but for his generosity and mentorship. ABC News Director Justin Stevens said Peter “left a significant legacy,” while former presenter Michael Rowland praised his unwavering commitment to fairness and truth. “There was never an agenda,” Rowland noted, “and that’s why Australians trusted him.”
Even in his farewell message, Peter offered heartfelt advice to young journalists—encouraging passion over cynicism, teamwork, preparation, and above all, kindness. He believed in showing up early, staying curious, and listening more than speaking. It’s the kind of wisdom that speaks volumes about who he was, not just as a professional, but as a person.
Peter Ryan was more than a journalist. He was a guide, a mentor, and a steady compass in an industry often spinning too fast. As we reflect on his passing, we also honour a life lived with purpose, honesty, and quiet brilliance. His voice may have signed off for the final time, but the stories he told—and the values he upheld—will echo in newsrooms and homes across Australia for years to come.
