Living the Dream on a Private Island in the St. Lawrence
Let me tell you about something that sounds like it came straight out of a movie—but it’s real, and it’s happening right here in Quebec. Daniel Laprise, the founder of Maisons Laprise, a well-known prefab home company, has made a dream come true by buying his very own private island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River.
Yep, you heard that right—his own island . Back in 2012, he acquired Île à Deux-Têtes, just off the coast of Montmagny. The place is about 5 kilometers from shore and feels like you’ve been transported to another country entirely. According to Laprise, when you’re there, it doesn’t feel like Quebec at all—it feels like you’re on vacation somewhere far away in the south.

And he’s really leaned into that vacation vibe. He’s built pavilions that resemble the ones you'd find in Caribbean resorts, using a style that brings that exotic, laid-back feeling to life. Everything on the island runs on solar energy—except for the heating, which is done with propane. There’s even a big, beautiful private beach just for him and his guests. Sometimes, he even works from there, thanks to solid cell reception.
But this wasn’t just an impulsive purchase. Before owning the island, Laprise was already exploring the river with his boat, hopping from one marina to another. But he wanted something more personal, more permanent—somewhere he could just dock and stay. Eventually, he heard whispers about Île à Deux-Têtes, located in the Isle-aux-Grues archipelago. The previous owner wasn’t initially interested in selling, but after several visits and some persistence, she finally agreed.
Now, access to the island is an adventure in itself. Depending on weather, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour by boat. And if the water's too rough? There’s always the helicopter option. The journey, Laprise says, is sometimes as enjoyable as being there.
It’s not just a slice of paradise—it’s a lifestyle choice. This island isn’t about investment or resale value. It’s about building memories with family and friends, unplugging from the everyday rush, and reconnecting with nature in a way that’s peaceful and incredibly rare.
So when Daniel Laprise says, “It feels like another country,” he really means it. He’s crafted his own getaway, and in doing so, fulfilled a dream many of us only fantasize about.
