Michelle Keegan to Lead ITV’s Gritty New Crime DramaThe Blame
Michelle Keegan is stepping into the shoes of a detective inspector for ITV’s brand-new crime drama The Blame —and this one sounds like it’s going to keep audiences glued to their screens. The six-part series will see Keegan, fresh off the success of Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once , teaming up with Douglas Booth ( The Riot Club , The Sandman ). Keegan will play DI Emma Crane, while Booth takes on the role of DI Tom Radley. Together, their characters are drawn into an investigation that’s anything but straightforward.
The story begins with the shocking discovery of a teenage figure skater’s body—Sophie Madsen—in the seemingly quiet town of Wakestead. What at first appears to be a tragic and isolated incident quickly spirals into a dark, tangled web of lies, corruption, and betrayal. As Crane and Radley dig deeper, they uncover institutional cover-ups, moral compromises, and the ugly underbelly of police politics. And while they’re chasing the truth, Crane is also forced to navigate the dangerous internal power struggles within her own department, where trust is in short supply.
The series is based on Charlotte Langley’s debut novel and has been adapted for television by Megan Gallagher ( All Her Fault ), who serves as lead writer and executive producer. Gallagher has described the project as both urgent and important, tackling themes like misogyny and systemic corruption while delivering all the hallmarks of a gripping thriller.

Joining Keegan and Booth is an impressive ensemble cast: Ian Hart ( Mr Bates vs The Post Office ) as DCI Kenneth Walker, Nigel Boyle ( Line of Duty ) as digital forensic technician Brett Shergill, Joe Armstrong ( Gentleman Jack ) as ice-skating coach Kyle Frasier, and Matilda Freeman ( Passenger ) as the murder victim Sophie. Also appearing are Gavin Spokes ( House of the Dragon ), Josh Bolt ( Masters of the Air ), Nathan Mensah, and Ceallach Spellman ( Cheaters ), each playing key members of the Wakestead police team.
Behind the scenes, the production is helmed by Quay Street Productions, the team behind Fool Me Once . Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee are on board as executive producers, with Bex Rycroft directing the first three episodes and Claire Tailyour taking the final three. Filming is set to begin this summer in and around London, and the series will air on ITV1, ITVX, and STV Player.
ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, has called the project “a brilliant new crime thriller full of surprising twists and a compelling investigation,” praising both Gallagher’s writing and Keegan’s leading role. The network is promising a high-stakes, edge-of-your-seat drama that blends mystery, emotional depth, and a timely examination of issues still resonating in real-world policing.
With its combination of a strong lead, a stellar supporting cast, and a plot rich in suspense and social relevance, The Blame is shaping up to be one of ITV’s most talked-about dramas of the year. Viewers can expect tension, betrayal, and plenty of “who can you trust?” moments as the truth about Sophie Madsen’s death slowly comes to light.
