Questions Surround Death of Delta State Student Trey Reed
The community at Delta State University and beyond has been shaken by the tragic discovery of 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, whose body was found hanging from a tree on campus early Monday morning. His death, which occurred near the school’s pickleball courts, was first reported by the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, and officials said there were no immediate signs of physical assault or injury. Still, uncertainty surrounds the case, and Reed’s family has made it clear they want answers.
According to reports, Reed was discovered shortly after 7 a.m. Classes and all university activities, including events for Delta State’s centennial celebration, were canceled that day as the community tried to process the news. The university president, Daniel Ennis, expressed condolences to Reed’s family, classmates, and friends, describing the campus as deeply saddened. Support services, counselors, and prayer gatherings have been made available for grieving students and staff.

Despite these efforts, questions remain. Reed’s family has retained nationally known attorney Ben Crump, who said the family has been given vague information and is demanding a transparent investigation. Crump emphasized that Reed was a joyful young man with a bright future ahead, and his loved ones deserve clarity about what led to his death. Another family attorney echoed this call, asking for an independent investigation and autopsy.
Confusion has grown because Reed’s relatives were reportedly told conflicting stories by authorities. At one point, law enforcement allegedly informed them he had been found unconscious in bed and his death ruled a suicide. Later, media outlets reported that he was found hanging outdoors. Reed’s grandfather described him as a vibrant young man who wanted to become a truck driver like his grandfather once was, adding that the family cannot reconcile the joyful, ambitious Trey they knew with the circumstances being described.
The coroner’s preliminary findings noted no broken bones, cuts, or bruises that would point to foul play, but officials stopped short of calling the death either a suicide or a homicide. Reed’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for further examination, and results from the autopsy are expected to provide more insight. Meanwhile, Congressman Bennie Thompson has requested that the FBI take on the case, citing Mississippi’s history of racial violence and the urgent need for an independent review.
Civil rights organizations, including the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus, have also spoken out, saying they are closely monitoring developments and pushing for accountability. Reed’s family, however, remains without direct communication from the university, despite public statements of support made online.
For now, what is clear is the immense sense of loss felt by Trey Reed’s family, friends, and the Delta State community. His passing has left unanswered questions, and until those answers come, his loved ones say they will continue pressing for the truth.
