Connor Hellebuyck Out 4–6 Weeks After Knee Procedure

Big news from the Winnipeg Jets today as their star goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, is being sidelined for the next month to month-and-a-half following a minor arthroscopic knee procedure. The decision comes after Hellebuyck and the team decided it was best to address the knee issue now, rather than letting it linger and risk a more serious setback.

Hellebuyck, who’s 32 and has been a cornerstone for the Jets for years, last played during their thrilling 4-3 shootout win over the Calgary Flames, where he made 31 saves. This season, he’s currently sitting with an 8-6-0 record, a 2.51 goals-against average, and a .913 save percentage. While those are solid numbers, they’re a bit down from last season when Hellebuyck was truly unstoppable. He went 47-12-3, posted a 2.00 GAA, and a .925 save percentage, helping the Jets capture the Presidents’ Trophy. His exceptional performance also earned him both the Hart Trophy and the Vezina Trophy, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s elite goaltenders.

With Hellebuyck out, Eric Comrie will step into the starting role. Comrie, 30, has already shown he can handle the job, making 22 saves in the Jets’ 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets recently. He has a 4-1-0 record this season with a 2.60 GAA and a .908 save percentage. In addition, the Jets have recalled Thomas Milic from their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Milic, who was drafted 151st overall in 2023, has been impressive in the AHL with a 5-2-2 record, a 2.14 GAA, and a .921 save percentage.

The timing of this move is crucial as Winnipeg sits third in the Central Division with a 12-7-9 record. They’re set to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday and then face the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. While losing a goaltender of Hellebuyck’s caliber is always a blow, the Jets are hoping that taking care of the knee now will ensure he comes back healthy and ready to reclaim his dominant form.

It’s a short-term challenge for Winnipeg, but with Comrie and Milic stepping up, the team will look to keep their momentum going and stay competitive in a tight division race. Fans will definitely be watching closely to see how the Jets adapt without their star netminder over the next month or so.
