Morocco U17 Falls Short Against Brazil in Quarterfinal Thriller
Today, in a tightly contested FIFA U-17 World Cup quarterfinal, Morocco’s U17 team faced off against a formidable Brazil U17 squad at the ASPIRE Academy Pitch 7 in Doha. The match was highly anticipated, as the Atlas Lion Cubs had impressed in the group stages and earlier knockout rounds, including a thrilling 3–2 victory over Mali that showcased their set-piece mastery and resilience under pressure.
From the kickoff, Brazil asserted their dominance, holding 59% of ball possession compared to Morocco’s 41%. Despite Morocco’s disciplined defensive setup in a 4-1-4-1 formation, Brazil managed to break the deadlock in the 16th minute when Dell found the back of the net, giving the Seleção an early 1-0 lead. Morocco struggled to create significant chances, registering only two shots in the first half, and none of them on target, while corners and other attacking opportunities remained scarce.

Morocco’s coach, Nabil Baha, had previously emphasized the team’s confidence and potential, noting their ability to handle strong opponents. He praised the players’ performances against Mali, especially the quick set-piece goals that had unsettled the opposition. Yet, today, Brazil’s organization and clinical finishing were evident, and the Moroccan squad found it difficult to replicate the magic from their previous match.
The Moroccan lineup featured Chouaib Bellaarouch in goal, with defenders Hamza Bouhaddi, Yousef Bellahsen, Bilal Soukrat, and Moncef Zekri forming the back line. In midfield, Elyes Saïdi played a holding role, while Abdelali Eddaoudi, Zakari El Khalfioui, Oualid Ibn Salah, and Ismail El Aoud tried to orchestrate attacks. Upfront, Ziyad Baha Abelhadj led the line. Brazil countered with a 4-2-3-1 system, with Joao Pedro in goal, Dell leading the attack, and a midfield that controlled the tempo throughout the match.
Despite Morocco’s determination and moments of spirited play, Brazil’s defensive solidity and precision in attack meant the Atlas Cubs could not find an equalizer. The match ended 1-0 in Brazil’s favor, knocking Morocco out of the tournament at the quarterfinal stage.
While the loss was disappointing, the Moroccan team’s journey through the U17 World Cup highlighted their potential and skill. The squad demonstrated strong teamwork, resilience, and tactical discipline, qualities that will serve them well in future competitions. Meanwhile, Brazil advances to the semifinals, keeping their sights on the title.
This quarterfinal clash has shown that Moroccan football at the youth level is on the rise, capable of competing with traditional powerhouses. The Atlas Cubs may not have progressed further this time, but their performance has earned respect and excitement for what’s to come in Moroccan football.
