Heavy Snowstorm Brings Widespread School Bus Cancellations Today

A powerful winter storm has moved in overnight, and it’s caused major disruptions across several regions today. In both Waterloo Region and much of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, school transportation has been hit hard. While most schools remain open, the buses that thousands of students rely on simply couldn’t be put on the roads because conditions were just too dangerous.

In Waterloo Region, every school bus, taxi service, and special-education transportation route has been cancelled for the day. This affects both the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board. The cancellations were announced early this morning after heavy snowfall blanketed the area and visibility dropped sharply. Roads became slippery, and crews have been struggling to keep up with the accumulation. Even though buses aren’t running, all public and Catholic schools remain open, including community programs and extended-day childcare. St. Louis online, daytime, and evening classes are also operating as usual. However, secondary school sports events under WCSSAA have been cancelled, as travel for teams was deemed unsafe.

The situation across the GTA has been similarly complicated. Several school boards made early decisions to cancel bus service after the region saw freezing rain followed by 10 to 15 centimetres of snow. In Durham and York Regions, all buses for public and Catholic boards have been cancelled outright. Students who can get to school safely are still welcome, but transportation won’t be provided.

In Peel, buses have been cancelled specifically in Zone 3, which covers Caledon—an area that often feels the brunt of winter weather first. Over in Halton, buses have been cancelled in Zones 2 and 3, affecting Milton, Georgetown, and Acton.

Toronto, meanwhile, is in a slightly different situation. Schools across the TDSB and TDCSB remain open, and buses are technically running, but families have been warned that heavy weather-related delays are likely. With roads packed with snow and a busy morning commute, significant slowdowns were expected. In Hamilton-Wentworth, buses for the Catholic board are still operating, though drivers have been urged to use extra caution.

Overall, it’s been a messy, slow-moving morning across southern Ontario. The snowstorm didn’t just affect schools—commuters have faced delays, collisions have been reported across major highways, and even TTC routes and airport flights have been impacted. With more snow possible later today, families are keeping an eye on updates while students navigate a school day that began with winter’s first major disruption of the season.
