Cadillac Loses First F1 Point on Technicality
The glitz and glamour of Monaco often brings unexpected drama and this year's Grand Prix was no exception, especially for the burgeoning Cadillac F1 team. What should have been a moment of triumph, their first ever points finish, evaporated in the stewards' office after a post-race penalty was applied to driver Sergio Perez. This incident highlights how razor-thin the margins are in Formula 1, where even a fraction of a second, or a millimetre out of place, can have significant consequences. It's a tough lesson for Cadillac, but a familiar story in the high-stakes world of motorsport.
Sergio Perez had a challenging afternoon navigating the notoriously tricky Monaco street circuit, but he managed to fight his way back into the points, crossing the finish line in 10th position. This would have marked a significant milestone for Cadillac, their very first F1 point, a testament to their hard work and development in their sixth race. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the stewards initiated an investigation into his positioning on the grid for the final restart following a red flag. It's a frustrating way to lose a hard-earned result, especially after such a demanding race.

The stewards' verdict was clear: video evidence showed that Sergio Perez's front-right wheel was outside the designated starting box at the restart. This resulted in a standard 10-second time penalty, which dropped him from 10th place down to 15th, meaning he was the last classified finisher. Adding to the complexity, Perez had already served a drive-through penalty earlier in the race for lining up in the wrong grid slot at the initial start, a mistake that saw him inadvertently occupy the space left vacant by Gabriel Bortoleto's Audi.
This penalty not only cost Cadillac their maiden point but also shifted the points standings for others. Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin-Honda alliance was promoted into 10th place, securing a point that was initially thought to be Cadillac's. Gabriel Bortoleto moved up to 11th, ahead of George Russell and Nico Hulkenberg, showcasing how one penalty can create a domino effect through the lower order of the field. Perez himself expressed optimism about the team's performance, acknowledging the effort but also the sting of the penalty.
Despite the disappointment, Perez emphasized the team's resilience and determination throughout the difficult Monaco race, where they faced numerous setbacks. He expressed pride in the team's performance, stating that finishing in the points so early in Cadillac's F1 journey was beyond their wildest dreams. While the stewards' decision is final, Perez remained confident in the team's ability to keep pushing and achieve more points finishes in the future. The focus now shifts to the next Grand Prix, where Cadillac will aim to bounce back from this technical setback.
