Urgent Warning as Grass Fire Rages in Edmondson Park
Attention all residents of Edmondson Park: the situation is critical as a massive grass fire is currently out of control in Sydney's south-west. This blaze, which began earlier today, has rapidly spread along Camden Valley Way and is dangerously close to homes in the area.
The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) initially issued an emergency warning for this fire, which was later downgraded to an Advisory. The situation remains severe, with strong westerly winds fueling the flames and causing the fire to move unpredictably. Residents in the vicinity of Talarna Hill Drive to Jardine Drive were previously advised that it was "too late to leave" and should seek shelter immediately.

Firefighters are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control. As of now, approximately 80 firefighters are on the ground, supported by 20 fire trucks and water-bombing aircraft. The RFS has indicated that the fire is impacting homes and properties, with embers potentially starting spot fires well ahead of the main blaze. This is a significant concern, as these spot fires could endanger homes before the main fire front arrives.
The blaze has already consumed significant areas of grassland and has been exacerbated by the strong gusty winds and high temperatures affecting the region. RFS Inspector Steve Brown highlighted that the fire, driven by these winds, poses a serious threat to residential properties. At least some properties have sustained damage, although the full extent is still being assessed.
Due to the fire's intensity and the hazardous conditions, several roads in the area have been closed. Camden Valley Way and Bringelly Road, particularly between Talana Hill Drive and Skyline Crescent, are currently shut. Motorists are advised to avoid these routes and seek alternatives. Additionally, train services on the T2 Inner West and Leppington line between Glenfield and Leppington have been suspended, with replacement buses in place.
Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest updates through the Hazards Near Me app and the RFS website. Keeping up with current conditions is crucial as the situation continues to evolve. If you are in the affected area, please ensure you have a plan in place for safety and be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen.
This is a rapidly developing situation, and the safety of all residents is the top priority. Please follow all official advice and stay alert to further updates.
