Red Flag Warning Issued: High Fire Danger Due to Strong Winds

Hey everyone, if you're heading outside today, be extra cautious because we have a Red Flag Warning in effect. This means conditions are prime for wildfires , and any spark could turn into a dangerous blaze. So, let’s break it down—what’s happening and why today is such a high-risk fire day.

We’re closing out February with some strong, gusty winds and low humidity , a dangerous combination when it comes to fire danger. Winds today will be blowing in from the southwest at speeds up to 40 MPH , making it incredibly easy for any small fire to spread rapidly. On top of that, humidity levels will drop to around 25% , drying out grass, trees, and anything flammable. This is why officials have issued a Red Flag Warning for the Ozarks until 8 PM .

Later tonight, the winds will shift to the northwest as a cold front moves through. While this might bring a bit of relief in some areas, it also adds an extra challenge for firefighters battling any active flames. These shifting winds can change a fire’s direction unpredictably, making containment even harder. If that wasn’t enough, temperatures will drop into the mid-30s overnight , bringing a chilly but breezy night.

As we head into the weekend, conditions improve slightly, with seasonal temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s on Saturday . Winds will still be breezy at around 10 to 15 MPH, but the fire risk should decrease. However, keep in mind a freeze is expected Saturday night, with temps dipping into the upper 20s .

Looking ahead to next week, we’ve got possible thunderstorms on Tuesday , with severe weather risks for parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi . Here in the Ozarks, we might see a few strong storms, so it’s something to watch. After that, colder air will move in, and Wednesday could start with misty showers and dropping temperatures before we finally get some sunshine back by Thursday.

So, what can you do today? Avoid outdoor burning at all costs. If you’re grilling, camping, or doing anything that involves fire, be extra cautious. Even a small spark from a cigarette or chainsaw could ignite a wildfire in these dry and windy conditions. Also, stay updated on local alerts —if a fire does break out, officials may issue evacuation warnings.

Stay safe out there, keep an eye on the wind, and let’s do our part to prevent wildfires.
