Jonathan Kuminga Set to Return for Warriors' Playoff Push Against Kings
Big news for Golden State Warriors fans—Jonathan Kuminga is expected to make his much-anticipated return on Thursday night against the Sacramento Kings. After being sidelined for the past 31 games due to a significant right ankle sprain, Kuminga is finally on the verge of rejoining the team at a crucial moment in the season.
Kuminga suffered the injury back on January 4th in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies when he landed awkwardly on Desmond Bane’s foot. Since then, it has been a long and careful recovery process. Initially, he had to rely on crutches, and it wasn’t until early February that he could start working on his on-court conditioning again. The Warriors had hoped to bring him back during their recent road trip, but lingering swelling and soreness delayed his return.
Now, all signs point to him being back in action on Thursday—pending final medical clearance and a successful practice session on Wednesday. According to sources, the Warriors' medical staff, led by Rick Celebrini, will have the final say, but unless there are unexpected setbacks, Kuminga should be ready to go.

Before the injury, Kuminga was playing the best basketball of his young career. He was averaging over 30 minutes per game as a key contributor off the bench, showcasing his scoring ability with performances of 26, 34, and 20 points in the stretch leading up to his injury. His dynamic slashing ability and athleticism were crucial in the Warriors’ offense, and his return could significantly boost their playoff aspirations.
Head coach Steve Kerr has emphasized patience in reintegrating Kuminga, ensuring that he doesn’t rush back too quickly. The plan is for Kuminga to come off the bench initially, with a minutes restriction to ease him back into rhythm. Given how well players like Moses Moody, Gary Payton II, and Gui Santos have stepped up in his absence, Kerr will have to tweak his rotations to accommodate Kuminga’s return.
The Warriors have been red-hot lately, winning 12 of their last 14 games, thanks in part to the arrival of Jimmy Butler. However, as the team eyes a deep playoff run, integrating Kuminga into a lineup featuring Butler, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green could be the key to unlocking their full potential. His explosiveness, defensive versatility, and rim pressure will add another dimension to the team’s attack.
Jimmy Butler himself is eager to have Kuminga back, recently praising the young forward’s skill set. “He’s hella athletic. Can shoot it. Can score in a multitude of ways. And he can guard. I think he’s going to come back and do what he’s been doing. My job is to make it even easier on him. So come on back and help us get some dubs,” Butler said.
With just a handful of games left in the regular season, Kuminga’s return comes at the perfect time. The Warriors are making a strong push for playoff positioning, and having a healthy Kuminga back in the mix could be the X-factor they need to compete at the highest level.
Barring any last-minute setbacks, expect to see Kuminga back on the court on Thursday, ready to contribute as the Warriors gear up for an exciting playoff run. Stay tuned, because this team is just getting started.
