Chaos at Mordialloc Beach as Riot Police Move In After Youths Run Amok

What started as a busy summer afternoon at Mordialloc Beach in Melbourne’s south-east quickly spiralled into chaos, after hundreds of youths descended on the area and sparked a major police response. By mid-afternoon, the scene had dramatically changed, with riot police, flashing lights, and officers in full gear moving in to regain control.

It’s understood that police were first called just after 3pm following reports of a brawl inside a nearby Woolworths supermarket. What officers encountered was far from a routine disturbance. Footage circulating from inside the store shows a large group of young beachgoers running through the aisles, knocking over products, spilling drinks, and pulling items from shelves. Witnesses described stock being smashed, items being stolen, and panic spreading among staff and customers.

As a precaution, the Woolworths store was placed into lockdown shortly after 4pm. In a statement, Woolworths confirmed the decision was made to protect staff and shoppers, praising store leaders for prioritising safety during what was described as a highly disruptive incident. The retailer also pointed to the situation as another example of why stronger protections are being sought for frontline workers.

Outside, the police response was escalating. More than 20 officers in riot gear, supported by around 20 police vehicles, were deployed to the area as the crowd of more than 200 youths shifted from the supermarket toward Mordialloc Pier and the beachfront. Riot police were seen forming lines and preparing to patrol, as tensions remained high.

According to Victoria Police, the crowd became hostile, with items reportedly being thrown at officers as they worked to disperse the group. Members of the Public Order Response Team were brought in to assist, signalling the seriousness of the situation. Vision from the beach later showed a disturbing moment where a group appeared to stomp on a young man’s head. Despite the alarming footage, Ambulance Victoria confirmed that no emergency treatment was required.

Police later confirmed that no weapons were sighted and, despite the disorder, no serious injuries were reported. As evening approached, officers continued working to break up the gathering and restore calm to the normally relaxed beachside spot.

For locals and beachgoers, the scenes were shocking. Mordialloc is typically known for its family-friendly shoreline and laid-back atmosphere, making the sudden outbreak of violence and unrest all the more confronting. As authorities review the incident, questions will likely be raised about crowd control, youth behaviour, and safety at popular public spaces during peak summer periods.
