Zellers Makes a Comeback with a Modern Twist in Edmonton
Zellers — the name that once defined affordable family shopping in Canada — is officially back, and this time, it’s returning with a whole new vision. After years of nostalgia and speculation, the beloved retailer reopened its doors at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton on October 30, 2025, marking the start of what could be another exciting chapter in its long and storied history.
For many Canadians, Zellers was a household name. It was where families went for everything from school clothes to home goods, often followed by a meal at the famous Zellers diner. But after the chain’s decline and eventual closure in 2013, many thought it was gone for good. Now, the brand has been revived by the Benitah family — a name well-known in the Canadian retail scene thanks to brands like Fairweather, International Clothiers, and Bombay.
Under their new ownership, Zellers is getting a modern reboot that blends nostalgia with contemporary shopping experiences. Joey Benitah, the company’s chief operating officer, explained that the new Zellers will focus on “value, accessibility, and family-first experiences,” but on a smaller, more intimate scale. Instead of the massive department stores of the past, the new Zellers locations will take up more compact spaces, around 50,000 to 60,000 square feet. The goal is to make them easier to navigate while maintaining that classic Zellers affordability.

The first store in Edmonton features a curated selection of men’s, women’s, and kids’ apparel, along with home goods, seasonal décor, and luggage. Some of the familiar product categories from old Zellers — like toys and pharmaceuticals — won’t return, as the new owners want to focus on departments where they can offer real value and uniqueness. Shoppers will find popular brands like Reebok, Spyder, Disney, DKNY, and Nickelodeon, with more to come as the chain grows.
Of course, Zellers wouldn’t be Zellers without its mascot, Zeddy the bear. Fans will be happy to know that Zeddy is also making a comeback next year with a “Zeddy’s World” experience for families, including customizable teddy bears and even a partnership to support children’s cancer camps.
While the classic Zellers diner won’t be revived in its original form, the company has hinted at some new, interactive food and beverage ideas for the near future — keeping that fun community spirit alive.
Joey Benitah says this relaunch is just the beginning. The team plans to expand across Canada, starting with former Hudson’s Bay properties. His goal? To re-establish Zellers as a part of Canadian culture once again — not just as a store, but as a symbol of value, nostalgia, and community connection.
So, yes — Zellers is alive again. But this time, it’s not just about bringing back the past. It’s about reimagining it for a new generation of Canadian shoppers.
